Terms of Service
Last Updated: November 16, 2025These Terms of Service (the "Terms") set forth the conditions for using the mobile application "CaptionTube" (the "Service") provided by CaptionTube (the "Operator"). By using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms.
Article 1 (Applicability)
- These Terms shall apply to all relationships between users and the Operator regarding the use of the Service.
- The Operator may establish various rules and regulations (the "Individual Provisions") in addition to these Terms. These Individual Provisions, regardless of their title, shall constitute a part of these Terms.
- If the provisions of these Terms conflict with the Individual Provisions, the Individual Provisions shall prevail unless otherwise specified.
Article 2 (Service Description)
- The Service is a mobile application designed to support English learning by retrieving subtitles from YouTube videos. The main features include:
- YouTube video playback
- English subtitle display
- Japanese translation display
- Word highlighting functionality
- Subtitle search functionality
- Repeat playback functionality
- Video search functionality
- Recommended channels display
- Watch history storage (local device only)
- Customizable settings
- Users shall use the Service with the understanding that there is no guarantee regarding the accuracy of subtitle retrieval and translation results.
Article 3 (Eligibility)
The Service may be used by individuals who meet the following conditions:
- Agree to these Terms
- Agree to YouTube's Terms of Service
- Use the Service for lawful purposes only
Article 4 (Service Fees and Payment)
- The Service is currently available free of charge.
- The Operator may offer paid plans in the future. When paid plans are introduced, users will be notified in advance through the Service or website.
- When paid plans are introduced, billing will be processed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Paid plans may be subject to automatic renewal. In such cases, to cancel, users must disable auto-renewal in their store settings at least 24 hours before the renewal date.
- Refunds are subject to each store's refund policy.
Article 5 (Prohibited Activities)
When using the Service, users shall not engage in the following activities:
- Violating any laws or public order and morals
- Engaging in criminal activities
- Destroying or interfering with the functions of servers or networks of the Operator, other users, or third parties
- Interfering with the operation of the Service
- Collecting or accumulating personal information about other users
- Unauthorized access or attempts thereof
- Impersonating other users
- Providing benefits directly or indirectly to antisocial forces in connection with the Service
- Infringing upon intellectual property rights, portrait rights, privacy, reputation, or other rights or interests of the Operator, other users, or third parties
- Using automated tools, scripts, or similar methods for mechanical access or information collection
- Placing excessive load on the Service
- Using the Service for commercial purposes other than educational purposes (excluding use by educational institutions)
- Sharing a single account among multiple persons
- Modifying, reverse engineering, decompiling, or disassembling the Service
- Violating YouTube's Terms of Service
- Any other activities deemed inappropriate by the Operator
Article 6 (Suspension of Service Provision)
- The Operator may suspend or interrupt all or part of the Service without prior notice to users if any of the following reasons occur:
- Performing maintenance, inspection, or updates of the computer system for the Service
- Service provision becomes difficult due to force majeure such as earthquakes, lightning, fires, power outages, or natural disasters
- Computers or communication lines stop due to accidents
- External services such as YouTube API or translation services are suspended
- Other cases where the Operator deems it difficult to provide the Service
- The Operator shall not be liable for any disadvantages or damages suffered by users or third parties due to the suspension or interruption of the Service.
Article 7 (Restriction of Use and Deletion of Registration)
- The Operator may, without prior notice, restrict all or part of the Service use or delete user registration if any of the following apply:
- Violation of any provision of these Terms
- False information in registration details is discovered
- Failure to pay fees or other payment obligations
- No response to communications from the Operator for a certain period
- No use of the Service for a certain period since the last use
- Other cases where the Operator deems use of the Service inappropriate
- The Operator shall not be liable for any damages caused to users by actions taken under this Article.
Article 8 (Cancellation)
Users may cancel paid plans of the Service through the cancellation procedures established by the Operator.
Article 9 (Disclaimer and Limitation of Liability)
- The Operator does not guarantee, either explicitly or implicitly, that the Service is free from defects (including defects in safety, reliability, accuracy, completeness, effectiveness, fitness for specific purposes, security, errors, bugs, and rights infringement).
- The Operator shall not be liable for any damages arising from the Service to users, except in cases of intentional or gross negligence by the Operator.
- The Operator shall not be responsible for any transactions, communications, or disputes between users and other users or third parties in connection with the Service.
Article 10 (Changes to Service Content)
The Operator may change, add, or discontinue the content of the Service with or without prior notice to users, and users shall consent to this.
Article 11 (Changes to Terms of Service)
The Operator may change these Terms without obtaining individual consent from users. The revised Terms shall take effect upon posting on the Service or website.
Article 12 (Handling of Personal Information)
The Operator shall appropriately handle personal information obtained through the use of the Service in accordance with the Operator's "Privacy Policy."
Article 13 (Notices and Communications)
Notices and communications between users and the Operator shall be made by methods established by the Operator. Unless users notify the Operator of changes according to the format separately established by the Operator, the Operator shall consider currently registered contact information as valid and send notices or communications to such contact information, which shall be deemed to have reached users at the time of transmission.
Article 14 (Prohibition of Assignment of Rights and Obligations)
Users may not assign, transfer, or provide as security their status under the service agreement or rights or obligations under these Terms to third parties without prior written consent from the Operator.
Article 15 (Intellectual Property Rights)
- Intellectual property rights in the Service and its contents (including software, design, and text) belong to the Operator or the respective rights holders. Users may not reproduce, distribute, or otherwise use these materials without permission.
- Copyright in YouTube videos and their subtitles belongs to the respective content creators.
Article 16 (Governing Law and Jurisdiction)
- These Terms shall be governed by the laws of Japan.
- In the event of disputes regarding the Service, the court having jurisdiction over the location of the Operator shall have exclusive jurisdiction.
